How We Started Flea Boutiques

One of the most asked questions we get from clients when they first step into our stores is if we are a Flea market. While we understand the association, the name Flea comes from my nickname in French, "la puce" and is often used among French kids as a term of endearment. We also wanted to evoke a bazaar inspired aesthetic and carry a wide variety of brands that offered different looks, pricing, and styles!

We first started with one store and slowly over time we created various sister stores in our Northern Michigan towns, downtown Traverse City and Suttons Bay, Michigan. While my parents spent countless hours planning and building their boutiques, I was always happy to help out, unofficially.

In 2020, the world was going through a big change (that's an understatement) and I resigned as a Social Worker in a treatment center in East Harlem. I started helping out a bit more with developing an online store, social media, and buying. Fast forward to early Spring 2021, I walked by a vacant storefront on Smith Street in Brooklyn and reached out to the landlord. With my parents on board, we decided to take the leap and bring their boutique concept to Brooklyn! It's been a journey and it means so much to be so involved in the day to day within the Brooklyn community. While our footprint may look large, we are a fairly small but mighty team!

We hope you enjoyed hearing a bit more on how we got started!

Love,

Ines
